Carolina Beach is the island's social hub and one of the last classic boardwalk towns on the East Coast. The Carolina Beach Boardwalk runs along the oceanfront with amusement rides, arcades, shops, and Britt's Donuts, the no-frills doughnut stand that has had lines out the door since 1939. In summer 2026, the free Boardwalk Blast series brings live music and fireworks every Thursday night from Memorial Day through Labor Day, with bands starting at 6:30 pm and fireworks over the ocean at 9:00 pm.

Beyond the boardwalk, Carolina Beach State Park protects one of the few places on Earth where Venus flytraps grow wild — walk the Flytrap Trail, hike to Sugarloaf Dune, or launch a boat from the marina. Carolina Beach Lake hosts free movie nights on summer Sundays, and charter fishing, jet ski rentals, sunset cruises, and the Sea Legs pedal pub all run out of the marina area. Six minutes south, Kure Beach is what beach towns used to feel like. There are no high-rise buildings by law, the beach is wide and uncrowded even in July, and the town centers on the Kure Beach Pier — one of the oldest fishing piers on the Atlantic coast, freshly renovated and open for the 2026 season. You don't need a fishing license to fish from the pier, and walking it at sunrise costs nothing at all.

Ocean Front Park hosts free summer concerts and has a playground steps from the sand. Beyond that, Kure Beach is mostly cottages, porches, and quiet streets, which is exactly the point. If you want a big night out, Carolina Beach's restaurants are five minutes up the road, and downtown Wilmington is thirty. Pleasure Island has something almost no other East Coast destination can claim: two beaches where you can drive a 4x4 right onto the sand, one at each end of the island.

• Freeman Park (Carolina Beach's north end) – daily access passes are sold at the park entrance and online, or grab the annual permit ($225 for 2026) if you'll come back. Four-wheel drive only. Note for 2026: Erosion has closed the northern section to vehicles, and overnight camping is suspended ahead of the beach nourishment project, so check the town's website or call 910-458-4614 for current conditions before you go.
• Fort Fisher State Recreation Area (south of Kure Beach) – the only NC state park with 4x4 beach access, famous for surf fishing. Daily passes are $30 on weekdays and $40 on weekends (2026 rates), with an annual pass available at the visitor center. The pedestrian beach is free year-round.

The southern tip of the island packs in more than most whole beach towns. Fort Fisher State Historic Site — the Civil War fort whose fall in 1865 closed the Confederacy's last major port — opened a striking new $25 million visitor center in late 2024, with immersive exhibits covering centuries of Cape Fear history. Admission is free. The recreation area next door has some of the best shelling on the island.

Good to know for 2026: the NC Aquarium at Fort Fisher closed in May 2026 for a roughly 30-month renovation that will make it the largest aquarium in North Carolina, complete with a 400,000-gallon shark habitat. While construction runs, the aquarium's free Discovery Bay exhibit at Independence Mall in Wilmington is a fun rainy-day stand-in, with seahorses, lionfish, and a touch-friendly setup kids love.

From Fort Fisher you can also roll your car onto the Fort Fisher–Southport ferry for a 35-minute ride across the mouth of the Cape Fear River — the scenic route to Southport and the jumping-off point for Bald Head Island day trips.

• Choose Carolina Beach if you want to walk to the boardwalk, restaurants, and nightlife – especially with teens or a group.
• Choose Kure Beach if you want quiet mornings, uncrowded sand, and a pier at the end of the street – especially with young kids or grandparents.
